People and Pets: Pets in an emergency

Pets in emergency

Dr. Farid has a great article at Health by dratiffarid. Where the question is asked, “Are you prepared for an emergency?” As an animal lover, I wonder how many families have preparations for their favorite bird, cat, dog, lizard, and pet.

When I think about an emergency, visions of stray dogs and cats in flooded homes filled my head and I remember how many people had to leave their pets alone. So I wanted to give you some tips on how you can prepare for an emergency and make sure all your family members are taken care of.

Stickers, collars, and tags
The least that you can do is put emergency stickers on all the bottom windows of your apartment or home. This will notify emergency crew that pets live in the home. My favorite way of getting these stickers is by donating to the ASPCA. Not only do I get stickers but also I offer hope to hurting pets and animals in the city.

I’m a big believer that every pet should be collared and tagged. It’s the law to have your dogs and cats registered with the city. Dog and cat ID tags can be purchased at most pet stores. Most veterinarians can put an ID tag on your favorite bird or lizard.

Emergency Supplies
Supplies for your pet should be prepared just like you would prepare supplies for yourself. It’s always best to have extras on hand.

Dry Food for at least a week
Wet Food for at least a week
Non-electric can opener
Bottle water
Dish for water
Dish for food
Medication that your pet is currently taking
First aid kit
The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats
Extra collar, ID, and leash
Chew toys
Bedding
Poop bag for pet clean up

If you are unable to take your pet with you then try to leave dry food out for them to eat and water. Also give them a way to escape; I’ve seen pets hurt themselves because they were tied up during an emergency. It’s better to lose your pet for a bit then unintentionally harm your pet.

Some useful advice. We had our dog microchipped when she was a pup, but (fingers crossed) we’ve never had to put it to use.

Hindleyite, I hope that you never have to use the microchip. But it’s an awesome investment.
